Sudoku for geeks

I really like the two Sudoku games (one easy, one heavy) ever saturday in our local newspaper -  there are yet only three heavy games I could not solved over the last months and it is really fun. So maybe they are not really "heavy" - who knows.

But now I read this post about how to solve every Sudoku using XSLT (another variant), using SQL and regular expression. Ouch - where is the fun? If you know the algorithm to solve one, it can be expressed by every language poeple like to program. I would more like the algorithm to generate new Sudoku games...

Just received: XBox 360

YESSS! Unbelievable: at Friday last week I got a parcel - I'm the winner of a drawing by lots happened at the recent BASTA! So equipped with my experiences with the older XBox I started yesterday to get it work (the XBox 360 Core Set) - and my frustration growed over the time. Plugging all the cable was not an issue as I had help from my child's ;-). But then: turning on - the usual configuration screens are displayed: create a profile, connect to XBox Live etc. - crap, switch over to just gaming!

Me: "Oh, it's loud. OK, Laura - can you provide your favorite game CD? Yes, just put it in - it is as easy as it was with the old one..."
Me (a half minute later waiting that something happened): "Laura, you don't flipped the sides of the CD?"
Laura: "No - the cover is at top."
Me: "Mhm, seems the old Cd's are not working..." (I guessed that before, because the older controller's did not match the new hardware)
Maike, Laura: "Oooah. We cannot play with the dancing pad anymore? And all the cool games we just played...?" - "No multiple players anymore? There is now again just one controller...".
Me: "Yes, sorry. Looks like you are right... BUT: let's start try the other new cool features..."
Maike, Laura: "But we want to start gaming...!"
Me: "... like Video and Audio streaming!"
Maike (the younger): "What's that?"
Me: "Listen: ..." (longer talk here, cut).
Me, meanwhile trying to create a profile we needed: "Crap. Looks like I cannot create a profile without the memory unit. But look: there is a USB slot - let's get a memory stick and put it in - then we can go on successfully." I was totally wrong: it does not accept any USB stick as a memory unit replacement! And the best: there is no memory unit in the core package! I really have to bye a memory unit for around 34€ (64 MB) to successfully start anything on that crappy new console! The same amount of money I need to bye a memory stick of 1GByte!
Laura: "It's boring..."
Me: "OK, wait. I will get my Laptop, plug in the network cable - and then we can start doing all the new cool things..." As the laptop starts up, I navigated to the network configuration dialogs on the XBox - "Look, there is a web address we can look at how to get it work!"
Maike: "Dad, can you read what's there?"
Me: "Yes, it is English. But no problem: I can read it...  Ah, we have to install streaming software... named Zune. We have to download the file." (I just saw the small "international" green on gray link today, where I can switch the language, but not at the time I installed)
Laura: "It's boring, how long it will take?"
Me: "Mhm, around 5MB - two minutes only."
Maike: "How long it will take?"
Me: "Look at this progress bar, if it is at 100 percent, it's done."
Maike: "Oh, such a long time -- and then we can start gaming?"
Me: "No, but we should be able to listen to music and videos that are on my PC!"
Maike: "Why? We can just start them there with the Media Player..."
Me: "For gaming Mom has to bye a game branded for this new XBox."
Laura: "It's boring. Can you call, if we can play something?" (both went up to start playing with their Barbies)

Summery: without a memory unit, without a starting game, without a (wired) Internet connection, without a PC running at least Windows XP or Media Center, without a men /woman able to read English - the core package is just a dead piece of hardware useful for nothing really new - play a CD (we already own a CD player) is the only (untested) feature you can use immediately! I was so excited - now I'm really frustrated. Mostly about that required (and expensive) memory unit! If there is a USB port: why I cannot use the USB memory sticks I already own? Maybe I should really start reading the f****** manual - maybe I can? But it was easier to just bye the unit (and a game) yesterday evening - at least: now we are "in".

Use a DELL notebook? Check for DELL Battery Return Program

Yesterday in the Germany 8:00pm TV News at ARD: "Dell have to recall 4.1 million notebook computer batteries." Again.

My DELL laptop battery was near by but not in the listed part number range: https://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/ (you have to ignore the certificate error displayed in IE7 to read the page). But it should be worth checkin'

Earthquake

This night at around 3:00 AM we had a modarate earthquake: 5,4 Richter magnitudes. But it felt heavier as we woke up at night. Best of all: no damages or personal injuries, we got off all the fright.

Another free mailer with 1 GByte storage

By mail: GMX, my German free mail service provider has screwed up the store limits to 1 GByte for the FreeMail service (5 GByte ProMail and 10 GByte TopMail). So: how about a mail search feature and no ads? Then it will be feature comparable to GMail in web mail services...; But I really like to POP my mails: for that I'm in love with GMX. Thanks, guys!

Social engineering attacks by impersonation

Today I got a technical support mail from my e-mail provider (GMX):

Does it looks like a real warning? Yes, reading the first two lines of the mail in my OL2003 preview (I'm careful) of the inbox I opened that (bad! But who knows?) and got another warning:

Scan type:  Realtime Protection Scan
Event:  Virus Found!
Virus name: W32.Beagle@mm!zip
File:  Readme.zip
Location:  Mail System

Morality: spamers and worm/virus mass mail senders are real humans. They did not simply take over random e-mail addresses to spoof the sender address, they impersonate it! Fortunately nothing badly happens to my system :-/

You are carefully enough?

Yeah, it is: Spring!

Yesteray we visited the island Mainau, Lake of Constance. Yes, we live at the lake, but it isn't just a trip of 10 minutes: a hour by car followed by a 20 minutes cruise. But the childs really like it! It has a huge playground, wild and animals to stroke, pony riding, a house full of exotic butterflys, last but not least: nice flowers bushes and trees from all over the world. And at that moment it does not have too much tourists ;-) Overall: nice weather and a nice restful day.

Sign of live

Very busy the last days: spent time with my family on easter, finished the work to prepare our product for the chinese market and prepared my car for the summer time (spring finery).

That TeXML: an XML vocabulary for TeX sounds cool: now somebody can write a Word-XML/OpenOffice-XML to TeXML to TeX converter with the help of XSLT only. The power of XML spreads the world...

Rss Bandit UI translation goes on: now we have russian, chinese (simplified) and german 100% done! Thanks to Oleg, Ryan Ma for their work!

PROCOS AG Ski Event 2004: Lenzerheide Valbella (CH)

Last saturday we invented customers and partners to our every year PROCOS AG ski event in Lenzerheide, Valbella (Switzerland):

Click the image for some nice pictures of the event. For me as a "Lowlander" it was a amazing day: I'm a skier for just one year now and thought I'm well prepared (had a class last year), but that wasn't the case: not accustomed such long descents. And so the next day was mainly for relaxing and sleeping...

But overall: a very nice day! Thanks to all my colleges, the custumers and partners for sharing.

Music is on the air
Today I had a bit time to experiment with the blogging plugin for MS Media Player. Started w.bloggar, opened File|Settings|Media. Checked some options there: no success :-( OK, maybe restart the player..., no success. Why it does not work? Back to File|Settings|Media of w.bloggar: aaah, I need MS Media Player 9! So downloaded the 13 MB, installed. Start the player, select my Audio CD, start listening. Restarted w.bloggar: Taa Taaaa! Here it is:

Google in love

I like it as a search engine. But that does not mean, I love it in the real meaning of the word. Yesterday (!) just a few hours before the end of the ASP-Conference at Munich/Aufkirchen I was surprise the following to see as I opened my browser to visit a interesting site:

I recently found the reason for that effect, but dunno how I get the file on my machine. I scanned today with McAfee and Ad-Aware without any success (happy about that, but does not answer my question). The reason was a file in the Google program folder named ggext1.dll. If I just remove the file (reinstallation of the googlebar does not help), the effect goes away.

Then I saw that picture at google.com:

and received some links of other bloggers from Dare Obasanjo: Jeff Key or also Julia Lerman and now I have the idea where it comes from :-)  But it was really unexpected yesterday (not valentine's day) and I would like they would only modify their own site and let my machine and applications in my hands...

My today's trip through the Net
... starts this morning with the literature list of this article (german) within my favorite magazine I read last evening. My special interest was about the ThreadArcs used in the IBM prototype Remail described there. It is much more intuitive compared to similar research results found at MS Research. Scott Hanselman has also some comments about that here. As the result of reading the ThreadArcs research report I added this as a required feature for RSS Bandit to my internal list. Hopefully we get it done this year. One of the research paper references points to Jamie Zawinski. Visiting the homepage my first thought was: "Now they got me. It has opened my Command Promt window and exec. something like hex winnt.dll" ;-) But the second look opened my eyes. And my trip ends up with subscribing it's feed and feel with the man at the right of the first picture in the story: Hey kids, it's Exploding Whale Party Time! (Attention: bloody affair!)

Back, awaiting LOTR "Return of the King"

Yeah, back again from Thuringia Forrest, nice holidays with family and friends. Some pictures available soon!

Dare Obasanjo was very productive over the holidays: please read and comment about SIAM and feed Uri scheme. Somewhat unpleasantly are the problems Roy Osherove reports about RSS Bandit. Dare Obasanjo has already answered most of them and also fixed some of the issues. Comment: one of the reasons we moved the project from GDN to SF was in order to facilitate work for contributors. I just want to remember all users: please contribute patches, and help to make the "product" (is it really one?) better, easy to use, fast and working on all platforms. Especially we need support/tests of the project on Win98/Me, where we have some serious startup problems. Currently we did not have the machine(s) to test for all Windows platforms .NET is running on (in particular Win98/Me).

There is some hype about LOTR on the net, here, there and also on SamG's blog. I would like to go with my wife, but we need a baby sitter over the time... For hardcore LOTR fans go listening this Gollum Rap (flash movie) [Boing Boing].

Strait adrenaline. Inspired by a TV spot this week I visited the ghostrider site: special care to the trailers! Unbelievable that this is reality, not a stunt! I didn't recommend to drive this style, but you can get the kick... ;-)

Funny e-Mail client. Accidently found IncrediMail. And I thought, only Mac users really have fun with their machines and programs. On my machine I had some trouble importing my contacts and mails from Outlook 2003, it crashs each time I tried, maybe I should give the next Beta a chance.

Old command line friends
I just lost a few weeks worth of changes to RSS Bandit because I overwrote one of my files with one I got from Torsten without realizing Torsten had modified an old version of the file. If I was still using Emacs all I'd have to do is grab the RssHandler.cs~ file and I'd be back in business. [Dare Obasanjo Obasanjo: Why I Shouldn't Have Stopped Using Emacs]

Ok, next time I will send you diff script you can apply with patch :-)

We are visiting my parents this weekend for a big event: my dad's 60. birthday. It's nice to meet all my relatives I have ever not seen for years. 750 km each tour, to fly is too complicated and expensive. Thanks of the air-conditioning in our car the current weather does not matter too much.

I'm back from my holidays. It was a beautiful time in Italy/Venedig, but everything has once an end. Now I go on reading what happens while I'm offline:
  • BlogWorks 1.2 will include new nice features, awaiting the end of the beta phase.
  • RSS Bandit release 1.1.0.16 is available.
  • GDN Workspaces will move to a improved version: my personal highlight is the new VS.NET Addin for the GDN source control.
  • Comment API was changed.

More spam, more virus

Read on Feedster: new variant of the Sobig worm appears. Yesterday I got a mail from "System Administrator" titled "Your mail could not be delivered" with a completely unknown receiver mail address and an attachment. Clear that I have not opened the mail. Especially wondering about that message itself: have not send any message within the last 3 days (weekend). Also received some of the messages from support[at]microsoft.com which are reported to be virus last week. Spam-/Virus is filtered here by a server side running antivirus software (also my GMX account now filters) and on the client Cloudmark also helps.
But the best workaround to not open malicious mails in Outlook/OE is to disable the preview pane and enable the auto-preview for the Inbox folder. This way I can read over the first three lines of the message, display the mail header (Right-Click-Options) and then press "Block", the Cloudmark plugin button to move the mail to the Spam folder where they are deleted every 3 days. Missing /dev/null on my machine ... ;-)

Found on Harry Pierson aka DevHawk: PowerToys for VS.NET 2003. What I have missed a long time: the Custom Help Builder. Thanks for the links!

And then nothing at all happened: only preparations for my new tooth crown. Bandit today: tray icon stuff done, hot-key support etc. Local search feature (and feedster/google support would be nice.

The most interesting price/capability ratio detected on Would be good to know: does anyone have any experience with one of these hosters (Up-time, response-time, support, problems)? Or other suggestions?
